TrapCall: the iPhone app that unmasks blocked numbers

If you’ve ever had problems with prank callers interrupting your sleep or your day with anonymous calls, and you’ve had no luck finding out who they are, TrapCall for the iPhone might be what you need. Spending a hefty 201 days in review (that’s more than half a year!), the app has finally been approved on the app store and is now up for download. TrapCall is said to be the only app in the world capable of unmasking blocked and private phone calls. Here’s how the app is supposed to work: when you get a call from a blocked/private number, just hit the power button twice and TrapCall will do its job and trace the call for you. Besides giving you the unmasked number, the $5/month service provides you with a name and address as well via a text message or push notification. It’s unclear how this got approved by Apple, since it clearly doesn’t sound very legal, however the implications that it can put an end to prank calls for iPhone users make the app noteworthy. Other features of TrapCall include: voicemail to text conversion, an option to play a fake “disconnected” message for numbers on your blacklist, and alerts about missed calls for when your phone is off. Trap Call is available now for free on the Apple App Store.

iPhone 4’s retina display better than AMOLED? Not really, says Samsung

While many expected the iPhone 4 to have an AMOLED display, it obviously doesn’t. Instead, Apple developed its own technology (based on IPS – initially developed by Hitachi) and proudly announced a new type of display, called retina display.

The iPhone 4’s retina display has 3.5 inches and 960 x 640 pixels (326 ppi) – the highest resolution you’ll get on a smartphone nowadays.

When Steve Jobs introduced the new display, he said it’s “quite a bit better than OLED displays.” Samsung, the world’s largest maker of OLED displays, disagrees. A Samsung spokesperson told to The Korea Herald that:

“Structurally, IPS LCD technology cannot catch up with AMOLED display technology.”

The Korean company’s spokesperson further said that AMOLED technology is better than IPS when it comes to color reproduction, contrast ratio, response time and viewing angle. The spokesperson forgot to mention OLED displays’ poor sunlight visibility – from this point of view, Steve Jobs’ retina display is likely better.

However, Samsung has recently developed Super AMOLED displays (included in the Samsung Wave and Samsung Galaxy S), which feature 80% less sunlight reflection when compared to standard AMOLED screens – so the sunlight visibility problem seems to be solved
One main disadvantage of Apple’s retina display (with its super-high resolution) would be that “it increases battery consumption by 30 percent,” so in the end Super AMOLED screens might actually be better. But we won’t know for sure until someone gets an iPhone 4 and a Samsung Wave / Galaxy S together and compare their displays’ performance.

Birdbox Application for iPhone

If you’ve been looking for a cool application for your iPhone or iPod to work as an alarm clock, but haven’t found what you’re looking for, take a look at the Birdbox Application.

As the name suggests, the Birdbox is an alarm clock application related to birds. In other words, once you touch the iPhone screen it displays the image of a birdbox, and besides that there are also sounds related to nesting birds. If you want to make the whole scene more realistic, you can buy a real birdbox as well.

New iPhone (4G) – taller than the older iPhones?

We still don’t know the final name of Apple’s fourth generation iPhone (expected to be released in June or July), so until something official comes up, we’ll call it iPhone 4G.

Well, the iPhone 4G might be a bit different than the older iPhone models (including the 3G and 3GS), which all look about the same.

The folks over at iResQ have posted some photos that reportedly show parts of the new iPhone. It looks like the iPhone 4G is about 1/4 inch taller than the previous iPhones (which are all 115mm tall).

Another difference is that the new iPhone has a small reflective surface above the speaker (this might be just a proximity sensor). Also, “the LCD appears to be factory glued to the digitizer,” this making the iPhone 4G more similar to the first-gen iPhone than to the 3G and 3GS models.
