Nokia rolls out PR1.1 MeeGo update for the N9

Good news for Nokia N9 users as the promised PR1.1 MeeGo update is finally being rolled out. The update will be pushed out to N9 users in waves, so don’t be alarmed if you did not receive the notification about the update just yet. Be patient and we’re sure that eventually the update will get around to your handset.

Now this isn’t just a mere bug fix or minor update, but as Nokia had promised back then, the PR1.1 update will be bringing a slew of new features and improvements to the Nokia N9, Nokia’s first and last MeeGo handset, so in a way we guess we should be happy that Nokia is still pushing out updates for the device.

The update is expected to bring NFC tag reading ability, photo and video shooting with color filters, more powerful multitasking capabilities with better memory handling, Swype, faster Mail for Exchange syncing, noise cancellation to help reduce background noise, charging and calendar indications for the standby screen and a lot more.

Samsung launches ChatON for Android globally

Samsung is pleased to announce that ChatON is now available worldwide. In case you didn’t know, ChatON is a messaging app/service that works similar to WhatsApp/KIK Messenger etc. It allows smartphone users to send messages to each with data as opposed to regular texting rates, which essentially translates to free messaging.

Since the service uses data, consumers won’t get charged hefty bills for international texts, which is one of its main benefits. Besides text, users can send videos, pictures, audio clips, and even hand-written text. ChatON is available for all Android devices now and will be preloaded onto bada smartphones and selected Samsung feature phones starting this month. Samsung is also working on getting the app available for other platforms by the end of 2011.

Wall Street Journal App for Android

The Wall Street Journal really needs no introduction. The largest newspaper in the United States by circulation has been around in print since 1889 and now, almost 122 years later – it’s finally made its way to the Android smartphone.

The Journal has made the transition to the small screen for folks who want news on the go. Sure, the WSJ website has always been around, but the dedicated app takes things to the next level. The app provides news, views, analysis, and real-time quotes straight to your Android-powered smartphone. It also has the ability to save news for later reading, and a multimedia section for browsing photos, podcasts, and watching videos.

While the app is free, it unfortunately needs an additional mobile subscription on top of your current online subscription. Something a lot of folks won’t be pleased about. However, costs aside, it’s been getting some great reviews on the Android Market.

Skype for Android adds US 3G voice calls

A new Skype for Android update has enabled 3G voice calls in the US, addressing one of the biggest complaints users have made about the free VoIP software. The new app, v1.0.0.983, brings the same 3G calling functionality as international users have been enjoying to the US, rather than limiting it to the Verizon version of the Skype app as has been the case until now.

Meanwhile, there’s also a security fix in the new version. Skype is yet to confirm exactly what it is, but we’re guessing it’s something to do with recent complaints that the app can share personal information without users realizing it.

Skype is a free download from the Android Market, though obviously you’ll need a (free) account to actually use it.

TrapCall: the iPhone app that unmasks blocked numbers

If you’ve ever had problems with prank callers interrupting your sleep or your day with anonymous calls, and you’ve had no luck finding out who they are, TrapCall for the iPhone might be what you need. Spending a hefty 201 days in review (that’s more than half a year!), the app has finally been approved on the app store and is now up for download. TrapCall is said to be the only app in the world capable of unmasking blocked and private phone calls. Here’s how the app is supposed to work: when you get a call from a blocked/private number, just hit the power button twice and TrapCall will do its job and trace the call for you. Besides giving you the unmasked number, the $5/month service provides you with a name and address as well via a text message or push notification. It’s unclear how this got approved by Apple, since it clearly doesn’t sound very legal, however the implications that it can put an end to prank calls for iPhone users make the app noteworthy. Other features of TrapCall include: voicemail to text conversion, an option to play a fake “disconnected” message for numbers on your blacklist, and alerts about missed calls for when your phone is off. Trap Call is available now for free on the Apple App Store.

Bing app for BlackBerry

The Bing app for BlackBerry has been updated with a few significant new features, including a mobile-optimized image search, instant flight status results, integration with OS 6 (which I presume means universal search, but can’t verify on Rogers for some reason),  a filter to cut out naughty results, and a “What’s Nearby” option to browse businesses close to you based on your BlackBerry’s GPS. There’s also that neat Hotspots thing on the Bing homescreen where you can read up on random, quirky bits of information every time you open it before launching into your query.

Bing still offers all the usual stuff, like voice-based queries, maps with directions and traffic, top news headlines, and some neat computational results thanks to a Wolfram|Alpha partnership.

Unfortunately for Microsoft, Google was quick to integrate with the BlackBerry 6 operating system early on, so most folks will probably stick with that unless there’s something about Microsoft’s offer that really revs their engine. I appreciate a little bit of choice, and this app definitely has a bit more style than Google’s, but I’m a creature of habit, and it’ll take a lot more than flight statuses to get me to switch my default search engine.

Instant Heart Rate Android App

This is a medical application known as Instant Heart Rate, and it is made for Android.
Apparently, all the user needs to do is put their finger on the touchscreen and in 10 seconds, it will measure the heart rate. How does that work? It is different than the Talking Heart Rate MP3 Player. Apparently, every heartbeat makes the blood rich with oxygen, which changes the skin slightly, and the camera can use your skin pigmentation to track a heart rate.
