Windows Phone 7 Launching October 11th?

Many mobile operating systems are currently on the market including the highly publicized Google Android and Apple iOS. Microsoft, on the other hand, hasn’t exactly had the best of luck with Windows Mobile which ahs been regarded by many as an unpleasant experience. Luckily, the software giant is looking to redeem themselves with the forthcoming launch of Windows Phone 7.

This brand new mobile oeprating system has been designed from the ground up to be touch friendly and features integration with Microsoft’s popular services like Xbox Live. Hell, they even completely revamped the mobile Internet Explorer web browser to include support for multitouch, HTML 5 and much more.

While we’ve seen a lot of talk regarding Windows Phone 7, we’ve yet to hear of an official release date for the mobile OS. Today, however, reports have surfaced that say Microsoft is planning the launch the platform on October 11th of this eyar.

Microsoft’s ‘Turtle’ and ‘Pure’ phones

They might not have been revealed at MWC, but that doesn’t mean the news flow on Microsoft’s long-rumored Pink phones needs to stop. Following the FCC entries that hinted at the future character of these devices, we now have word of an industrious hacker getting hold of the firmware for both the Turtle and Pure handsets. According to his data, the Turtle (believed to look like the square-ish creature on the left) will sport a 320 x 240 screen, while the Pure will have a more generous 480 x 320. Neither would encourage much hope for seeing these as the vanguard handsets of the Windows Phone 7 movement, but a litany of references to Premium Mobile Experiences would both confirm our earlier information and suggest that Microsoft is still going to hit us with something more than a simple feature phone. This is backed up by “a strong connection” to NVIDIA’s Tegra chipset, which would be powerful enough to service the rumored video and media management capabilities. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, separate codenames of Lion and Pride have been uncovered, indicating CDMA versions of the Pure and Turtle, whose names are attached to the GSM variants of the two phones.

Microsoft to unveil the Tegra-based Zune at the Mobile World Congress?

A Spanish website MuyComputer is claiming that the Zune phone will be launched at the upcoming Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Moreover, they say that the device will be powered by NVidia’s Tegra chipset ensuring smooth media playback. Features are unknown, but it is speculated that the Zune phone will rock WiFi, HDMI video output, and a 272×480 pixel touchscreen (why now WVGA?).
Personally I’m not that convinced on the specs, but I do believe we’ll see the Zune phone unveiled at the event. After all, we have the Windows Mobile 7 launch confirmed and we even saw that Zune software driver leaked.

Microsoft Tag makes a video appearance, still seeking popularity

“It’s the hyperlink in the physical world” says a Microsoft PR man, giving us the most succinct definition of what Redmond’s Tag initiative is all about. Having annouced its alternative take on the barcode at CES 2009, Microsoft has been working behind the scenes on proliferating the use of these multicolored Tags, which are designed to be snapped by nearby cameraphones.

Once the pattern is recognized, you can obtain digital content directly on your phone — whether it be a website link, YouTube video, or whatever — and the uses are pretty much limitless: business cards, product packaging, magazines, anything that can benefit from supplemental online content and has a flat surface is a candidate to be Tagged. Such is the theory anyhow, and Microsoft’s doing all it can to make it happen, with software for most mobile platforms, including the iPhone. Video demonstration after the break.
