Motorola Zeppelin spotted pre-launch in Brazil

A new Android handset believed to be the Motorola Zeppelin has been spotted in Brazil, where’s it’s expected to go on sale imminently.  Gizmodo Brazil caught up with the entry-level smartphone, which runs Android 1.5 and packs Motorola’s MOTOBLUR social networking aggregation.
Otherwise specifications aren’t entirely clear – this is only a prototype, too – but the Zeppelin is described as a Motorola BACKFLIP without the hardware keyboard.  The original source works for Motorola, apparently, where the phone was demonstrated to employees last week.

The Zeppelin is expected to go on sale in Brazil in March 2010, but there’s no confirmation or otherwise about whether it could cross over to the US or Europe; last we heard, however, there were rumors of it arriving at some point on T-Mobile USA.  Although there’s a market for budget Android devices, we can’t get quite as enthusiastic over them as some of the high-end options we’re expecting to see in the next six months.

Motorola Devour spotted in the wild, sized up against a Nexus One

While just recently made official, there have been plenty of Motorola Devour leaks over the years (er, months) to keep us occupied. This latest one has the aluminum colored phone sized up in bokeh-filled and yet surprisingly small, compressed and grainy shots — as if Mr. Blurrycam is holding up a nice, low aperture DSLR lens to his RAZR’s sensor. Oh well, it’s the thought that counts. What’s particularly helpful here is this comparison shot with the Nexus One, which shows the Devour to be a good bit larger, despite its significantly smaller screen size. Size isn’t everything, of course.

Mobile Handsets Motorola Devour officially coming to Verizon next month

Verizon Wireless has today announced that Motorola’s scrumptiously named Devour will be heading to its network next month, with it being the first VZW phone to feature Motoblur. Not that we’re seeing any surprises here, but a quick specification run down draws our attention to a 3.1-inch capacitive touchscreen, a touch-sensitive navigation pad, a pre-installed 8GB microSD card and Bluetooth support. Unfortunately, there’s no apparent mention of multitouch — and we wouldn’t expect it out of the box, since the Devour runs Android 1.6 — but we’re crossing our fingers (and toes, for that matter) for Google to sling that delightful Nexus One update to the rest of its high-powered Android phones in the very near future. There’s nary a mention of an asking price, but we’ll be sure to keep an eye out as launch day approaches.

Android display battle: In the end, there can be only One

It’s not everyday you get to see six (6!) Android devices pitted against each other in a display-quality grudge match. No, not that sensor sensitivity nonsense again, rather, just a plain ol’ video playback comparison for your subjective observations. Fortunately, the Android-loving kids over at HDBlog shot a video of the MyTouch 3G, HTC Hero, Motorola Milestone / Droid, Acer Liquid, Nexus One, and Samsung Galaxy (laid out clockwise in the image above). In our opinion, the Nexus One with its 3.7-inch AMOLED display packing a 800 x 480 pixel resolution comes out on top with the best overall image (though slightly on the red end of the color spectrum) — good thing the video wasn’t shot outdoors where that AMOLED is all but unreadable. But hey, that’s our opinion, form your own in the video after the break.

Digitimes Research: Motorola to unseat HTC for the top Android phone maker spot

According to Digitimes Research, Motorola (NYSE: MOT) is likely to unseat HTC as the world’s top vendor of Android-powered handsets this year. Apparently, Moto’s shipments of Android phones will account for a 34.7% share of the segment compared to HTC’s 31.9%.HTC ended last year with six million Android phones shipped, making the company the number one vendor with a 64.5% share of the segment. However, Motorola was able to move 2 million Droid/Milestone unites — or 25% of global Android phone sales — in less than three months. And since the Droid introduction, the American company has also released other Android models with plans to launch a total of 30 Android phones in 2010. Digitimes believes this strategy could help MOTO eventually ship a total of 12.5-15.6 million units by the end of the year. At the same time, total sales of Android smartphones are expected to reach 35-36 million units…

We’re certainly happy to see Motorola getting back to the game and are looking forward to check their latest products at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
